I keep having dreams of my ex. Tonight’s dream I bumped into him on accident. We talked, it was nice. He asked me how I was doing, I showed him pictures and videos of me which he seemed to enjoy. Then his mother showed up. I don’t have a lot of kind feelings towards this woman, she made me feel like I was off or wrong. My ex saw that I was cold and gave me his button up flannel. It helped. His mother sat down beside me on my left while he sat on my right. It was almost like I was a barrier between the two. Then I woke up. I know that I had residual feelings of care and softness towards my ex, but I hate how he left. That hurt so much. He was not kind after the break up where he was always kind before. I have no intention of reaching out to him again. I don’t want to share my life with someone who does not want me. I guess I miss how seen he used to make me feel, I am not sure how things changed so drastically between us but it happened and I have moved forward with my life. He still pops in my dreams though.
Dreams about an ex-partner often reflect unresolved feelings or emotions, rather than literal desires or intentions. Here's a detailed interpretation of your dream:
Encountering Your Ex: In dreams, running into an ex can symbolize a confrontation with past emotions or situations that you haven't fully processed. It suggests that there may still be some unresolved feelings or memories that your subconscious mind is attempting to address.
Pleasant Interaction: The positive conversation and the sharing of pictures and videos imply a desire to remember happier times or a longing for the validation and connection you experienced. It reflects a nostalgia for the sense of being understood and appreciated.
Presence of His Mother: Your ex’s mother’s presence in the dream represents the external judgments or criticisms you may have felt during your relationship. Her appearance indicates lingering feelings of inadequacy or unresolved tension related to her. She may symbolize the parts of the relationship that were beyond your control or the critical voices affecting your self-esteem.
Flannel and Gesture of Care: Him giving you his flannel symbolizes warmth, protection, and a comforting gesture. Despite the past hurt, this action reflects the comfort and safety you once felt with him. It highlights the duality of your emotions—missing the good while acknowledging the hurt.
Feeling as a Barrier: Sitting between your ex and his mother suggests a feeling of being caught in the middle or being a mediator in past conflicts. It illustrates your experience of being somewhat shielded from the harsher aspects of their relationship, yet affected by them indirectly.
Residual Feelings of Care: The lingering feelings of care you mention are natural, especially if the past relationship significantly shaped your sense of self-worth or identity. It’s normal to yearn for positive aspects like feeling “seen” and validated.
Moving Forward Yet Dreaming of the Past: Dreaming about an ex can occur even when you’ve consciously moved on. It doesn’t necessarily mean you want to return to the relationship but signifies processing and integrating past experiences into your new reality.
Overall, this dream reflects a complex tapestry of emotions—longing, unresolved hurt, personal growth, and the reconciliation of past and present identities. It may be beneficial to acknowledge these feelings, even if you have no intention of rekindling the relationship. Understanding these emotions as part of your overall growth can be a transformative process.
